4th of July Ghost

4th of July Ghost

The Summer of 1980, I was sixteen and was visiting my family in West Virginia. My mom and my sister stayed with her parents for the summer while my dad was away at work. I grew up in Pennsylvania but we visited WV a lot.

As the 4th of July approached my granny Tilly was planning on taking the camper to East Lynn Lake. My papa Bill got the camper ready to go. The first day of July we headed camping.

My sister Anna was twelve and had never been camping. I went camping with them when I was ten.

We got the camper all set up and I and my sis played in the creek. We grilled out and ate a ton of food, we played games and at dark we watched fireworks.

That night we slept on the sleeper sofa. I was awakened by a loud noise. I looked around the room. I heard a car door slam and a horn blow. I looked out the window to saw a girl in a pale blue dress walking from an old blue car. I watched her as she disappeared into the woods. I saw her again every night.

Finally, I talked to one of the security guards and that guy told me about a story that a young girl on the 4th of July got in a car with a guy who picked her up and he drove her to the secluded area at East Lynn and murdered her. Now her ghost haunts on the 4th of July.

Baby Crying

I use to live in Crum, WV in 1997. I stayed with my granny Debbie a lot in Marbone. Her house was close to the railroad tracks.

Late one summer night my cousin Johnny and I were out playing. We could hear a baby crying. We went to investigate. The crying came from near the tracks. We never did see anything or told anybody.

Three nights later, we were walking home and heard it again, so we investigated. It sounded like the baby was over the hill. Johnny fell and broke his leg. I ran and got help and we took him to the hospital. My granny told us to never investigate that baby crying again.

It wasn’t until I was sixteen when I heard a story about a lady who was running from her husband because he beat her, it was late and she tripped on the tracks because her foot got stuck. A train was coming so she tossed the two-month-old so that he would not get hit by the train. She was killed and the baby landed in the creek and drowned. Now you can hear the baby crying and sometimes you can see his mommy walking the tracks.

Chicken

I was a young boy about 12 back in the Summer of 70′. I had three best friends, Davies, Harold, and Frank. It was on Saturday and my friends and I use to sneak into my Uncle Leon’s backyard to watch the neighborhood Chicken fight.

This particular night at Mingo county two men got into it over their chickens and decided to play the game chicken. The younger guy had A F150 and the older man had a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

My uncle allowed us to join him in his car to the holler where the Chicken game took place. My uncle put one at one end of the road and the other at the other end of the road. My friends and I had to wait in the car.

My uncle waved his white t-shirt and both men started driving. The closer they got, the more determined they looked. As dark approached so did the trucks and they were going 40. The Ram went to swerve his wheel but the truck didn’t turn and both trucks hit head-on. One man died. It was a horrible scene.

30 years later just as it is getting dark, if you go up Breeden Creek you will see two car headlights and hear the engines roaring. I saw the dead man’s ghost and he does drive on.

Floating Man

First off my name is fake because no one has ever believed me.

I live on Moses Fork and I was driving home one night through Cabwaylingo Forest. Just past Cabin 13 and Sweat Water, I spotted something black hovering, as I got closer it looked like a man but he was three feet above my car floating. He wore a black trench coat, a black hat and he was very spooky. I wanted to pull off the road to get a better look, but I didn’t.

I have told my story but nobody believes me. I decided to tell my story again since Resident Undead came and investigated Cabin 13.

The Bride Ghost

I work at Cabel Huntington hospital in Huntington, WV.

My encounter happened on 5th Street Hill just after 9 pm. It was raining and I came upon a girl in a white gown with dark hair. I hit my brakes and she just vanished into thin air.

Well, I have heard the story of her for more than 50 years, there has been a story in circulation that late at night when it is raining, a young woman stands at the top of the hill and thumbs a ride from passing motorists. Since her appearance usually occurs after midnight and because it is raining, she always gets a ride. After several minutes inside the car, she vanishes into thin air.

The story goes that in the late 40’s a Huntington couple took their daughter and her fiancée to Wayne to be married. It was in the early spring, just the season for marriages, and the wedding went off without a hitch. However, on their way back, rain started coming down in a slow drizzle, the kind that makes roads slick. At the foot of the hill, just before coming to the bridge at the corner of Fifth Street and the boulevard, the car overturned and the bride was killed.

Ever since then, but especially in the early spring and only when it’s raining, the bride reappears on the hill. Standing at the top and wearing her white dress, she thumbs a ride from passing motorists.

Unidentified Noise

My family, the Clay family, stayed in the Group Camp at Cabwaylingo State Forest for years upon years, but three years ago we stayed in the group camp for the first time since the new building was built. That was a week of horror! First, there’s always a deadly smell after dark, the lights go on and off and then there are the noises. The first night I was there me and my sis Heather, and my three cousins, Amber, Jennifer and Paislee were up past midnight taking pics, crafting and eating. I was taking pics when we heard the first loud noise, at first, I thought it was a Vacuum. Of course, there are no vacuums for a cement floor.

“What was that?” Amber asked.
“Let’s check it out,” I said.

We checked the kitchen area and even outside and still didn’t know where the noise was. When we got back inside it stopped.

Night 2: Amber and I were coming back from showering at the shower house when we hear a loud creaking noise. There was nothing around us to make that noise, we were outside. Of course, the smell got worse.

Night 3: Everyone in the girl’s barracks was awakened at 3 am due to a loud scream and it was coming from the laundry room. My mom and Aunt Sylvia checked it out but saw nothing.

Night 4: all three noises were heavy. At 6 am the scream happened again.

The handyman came out to check stuff out and they saw and heard nothing.

Night 5: I was so scared on night 5 because I was asleep on my bunk when something touched me. I raised up to see nobody, then, I smelt that smell and started hearing heavy breathing. I saw everyone sleeping. I stayed awake the rest of that night.

I’m not sure what caused all of that, that week, but I do know it happened. My family all experienced stuff that week. I went back last year, that smell is still there and I head a few noises.

Flying Creeper

Mothman Sighting / WCHS/WVAH (November 21, 2016)

It was starting to get dark and I was fishing at Cabwaylingo Park. I decided to stay a little while longer even though my friends left. As I cast my line into the water I felt something blow my hat. I thought the wind had picked up but as I looked up at the sky, I saw nothing moving.

I went about my business and fifteen minutes passed and it happened again. I looked up to see some black creature with wings, it was almost like a bat but larger and had legs. Of course, I jumped up and ran leaving behind my poles, lunch box, and tackle box. I jumped in my truck and left.

Of course, my sister thought I was drinking so I never told anyone else. Three nights later, I went back to the creek bank to that same spot and watched in my car but I never saw anything.

This really spooked me. I swear I wasn’t drinking or smoking.

I Hope to never see it again!!!

Unidentified Footprints on the Roof

Unidentified Footprints

While driving home one night in Glen Jean, WV, I noticed two shiny eyes in my headlights on the side of the road. As I approached closer, my headlights hit what I can only describe as a black fur covered ape-like animal. It was crouched over on the side of the road and it peered sideways over its shoulder. It was flat-faced and its arms looked longer than it’s back legs. It threw its arm over its head backward to throw it’s body over the embankment behind it to escape the light. It appeared to be 5 to 6 feet tall and very agile. For days I looked and didn’t see it again until it snowed here in WV.

Close to where I had seen the creature I looked over and saw footprints in the snow on the roof of a building. I immediately turned around and saw footprints from the side of the road that led right up to the building, very close. Then it seemed to have jumped vertically from a standing position up onto the roof at least 8 feet high. The prints went across the slope of the roof and over to the other side. The prints had what appeared to be 2 long toes and a thumb out to the side with a heel print. It looked like it walked on two legs. The prints were larger than my adult nephew’s hand opened fully.

Later that night I drove by and there were more prints where it had been on the roof again. We are all hunters and fishermen in this area and many family members have lots of years in these woods and no one could identify the prints.

I have since seen new footprints in the fresh snow on that roof. So it remains in my area. Neighbors also complained of an unidentified screaming/moaning sound in the woods at night.

The Cabin Orb

I was visiting my great aunt around 2 years ago in Huntington. My now passed grandfather’s childhood home sits at the top of the hill behind her house. I went to take pictures of the old cabin with my aunt’s camera. I was standing at the bottom of the hill at around 6:30 in June so it was still very light. I had taken many pictures already and they all looked normal. In the last picture I took, I noticed something on the right side of the cabin. I realized it was a blue orb, but I thought it was a glare of light. Well, when I looked at the picture I took not 20 seconds before that one, there was nothing there or in the picture after that.

I was very scared of what it could be, and I made my aunt delete it off the camera. She told me not to be scared because of it most likely my grandfather’s spirit. She told me a story that night at his funeral.

At his funeral in 2006, I was only 2 years old. My aunt had taken me to the bathroom and she noticed that I was looking all around and giggling. She asked me what it was, and I said, “The blue light, it’s grandpa being silly.” She told me she never saw anything in that bathroom. When she told me that story I felt very relieved and happy that it was him. I told her that I wished she hadn’t deleted the picture. It turns out she didn’t and I’m very glad she didn’t.

1913 Grim Reaper

In the Fall of 1996, I was living in Huntington, WV sharing an apartment with 3 friends. Our apartment address was 1913. I came home after work one evening and walked inside. No one was home which wasn’t unusual but it was a typical night where we didn’t have a bunch of friends hanging out together as we were all 19 to 24 years old at the time and we’re either attending Marshall or working some job.

I walked inside and immediately I smelled a foul smell. Very putrid other than a typical dirty trash smell. Back then, we had a landline phone with a cassette tape answering machine. So, I entered through the kitchen to where the answering machine was. This apartment was two floors. First floor just a living room with an open kitchen and upstairs was two bedrooms and a small bathroom. I played the machine and there were no messages.

I said out loud to myself, “where is everyone?”

The next thing I know a dark growl said “nobody’s home” and a finger tapped my right shoulder. I sensed that something was behind me and was very very tall. I’m 5’8″ so it was at least 6’6″ or taller. Very tall.

I turned my head slightly to my right and saw a 3 knuckled bony finger that was very long and tapered. It had no skin but rather like a shiny metallic green and blue to it. And I could see a black hooded entity. I guess you call it nerves of steel or Good telling me to calmly and slowly walk up the stairs and lock my bedroom door which I did.

About an hour later, I was still in the bedroom and heard my roommate come home. She asked me why I was upstairs with the door locked and I told her what happened. Later that evening, we both revealed strange things that had occurred leading up to my experience. She had felt something smack her feet at night while she slept. I told her I felt the same thing and sometimes we would feel something hit the end of the couch where our feet were if one of us was watching a movie chilling on the couch.

To this day, it is getting easier to talk about it and share my experience. But I rarely talk about it. I will never forget it.

Hilltop Mansion in Harpers Ferry

Mansion
Hilltop Mansion - Harpers Ferry, WV / Zach Browning

In early March of 2017, my friends and I decided we wanted to explore a historical place near our hometown of Hedgesville. Me being a history buff, I decided to look up historical places in our area that were abandoned. I stumbled across a few places, but one, in particular, peeked my interests. That place was Hilltop Mansion in Harpers Ferry. After that, I started to contact local historians and paranormal groups in the area, so I could find out more about the place. I should also mention that I intended to film an uncut documentary for my Youtube channel ZachBrowningOutdoors. I called up my friend who is also a Youtuber and told him about the mansion, and he along with a couple of other friends and my brother planned to meet at the location the following weekend.

We arrived at the location somewhere around 3 PM. It was a cold but sunny day, so in our minds, we couldn’t ask for better weather to explore in. Since the place was all boarded up due to structural damage, we crawled through a window that was broken on the hillside of the house.

Once I was in the mansion I was greeted by brilliant architecture from the earlier 1800’s. Even if you know the place was beautiful, I had a strange feeling about it that I just couldn’t shake.

In my group, there were seven of us including myself. We all decided to go upstairs and explore the upper levels of the mansion. We made it up to the 3rd floor and everyone was checking out the now destroyed rooms down this long narrow hallway. I started walking down the hallway all the way to the end and by the time I turned around, all of my friends had disappeared. I found out later that they went up to the attic without telling me, but this is the part of the story that it starts to get creepy.

I turned around noticing that I was all alone in a mansion that had formerly been a field hospital in the civil war. I started walking back down the hallway, but for some reason, I stopped at one of the rooms. The room had its floorboards ripped out and it had the infamous 666 written on the wall in graffiti. This is where my paranormal whirlwind event started.

I heard a board creak and a footstep coming from the room I was staring into. I then panicked and started fast walking down the hallway. As I got to the end of the hallway a door to one of the rooms started closing on its own. I panicked, even more, when this happened because it felt like it was telling me to leave. At this point, I start yelling for my friends, but no one answered. I got to the top of the stairs and yelled for my friends again. No one answered again and I start to go into a hardcore panic mode. I start running down the stairs, but something in me made me look over my shoulder. When I did I saw a dark shadowy figure standing at the top of the stairs. I about tripped going down the stairs, but I didn’t care since I just wanted to find my friends.

As I was making my way down the multiple flights of stairs, I felt like I was being chased. I heard bangs, footsteps, and cracks following me all the way down to the main level. It stopped when I got to the bottom of the stairs. I then stopped and collected myself, and without thinking I called my brother who was with the rest of the group. I told him I saw something and he called me a bunch of different names because he thought I was just being a baby and I was over exaggerating. I remind you, I got all of this on camera, so I did make him eat his words. As I was reviewing footage, I realized that I caught a shadow figure as I was panning the camera around the main floor.

Now it’s time for the scariest part of this story (for me at least). I finally found my friends and of course, they were making fun of me, but I really didn’t care. I lied to them saying all I heard was a bang, and they just told me it was one of them (liars). It’s hard for me to believe that since all of the stuff that was happening to me was at least 2 floors below them. Everyone was taking pictures and carrying on in the old ballroom of the house. I didn’t really care about that, so I decided to start looking at some the graffiti that was left by other people. After this, I still to this day can’t remember what happened. I blanked out and when I woke up I was at the end of a hallway that I had never been down. I was mortified to find out that I came right next to a hole in the floor with an air conditioning unit falling from the ceiling. I showed the footage to a psychic medium and she believes I was partially possessed because I lost my memory and the video clearly shows me wandering down a hallway. This wasn’t my first experience with the paranormal, but it for sure was a terrifying one.

The Grafton Monster

The Grafton Monster
From the book "Monsters of West Virginia: Mysterious Creatures in the Mountain State" by Rosemary Ellen Guiley

Should you find yourself near the river, listen carefully for a whistling sound. It may be the only warning you get!

Teen-Age Monster Hunting Parties Lates Activity On Grafton Scene – Grafton Sentinel June 18th, 1964

Want to go “monster” hunting?

If so just join the roving bands of teenagers who are apparently convinced that a “monster” exists and is roving in the section of Riverside drive near the city stone quarry.

Wednesday night several bands of teenagers armed with flashlights, mallets, crowbars and the like, were reported searching the Riverside drive area.

The description of the alleged Grafton “monster” sounds suspiciously like that of the recent reports of a “monster” in Michigan, except that Grafton’s seems to be a bit bigger in every respect.

One teenager said that the youths on Wednesday night were searching for a creature “nine feet tall and about four feet wide.” He said it is agreed that the creature is white, has no discernible head and emits a weird whistling sound.

So far as could be ascertained today, area law enforcement authorities have taken no official notice of the reports of the Riverside drive “monster.”

Several teenagers, none of them identified by name, have reportedly “seen the monster” and given fairly tallying reports of its appearance.

The tale is even embellished with the theory that the creature was first sighted in the Morgantown area and arrived in the Riverside area via the Monongahela and Tygart rivers.

One youth suggested that it might be an escaped Polar bear, but offered no suggestions as to where such an animal could have escaped.

“Monster” Result Of Spring Fever, Wild Imagination – The Grafton Sentinel June 19th, 1964

Grafton’s alleged “monster,” reportedly the personification of the active imaginations of a number of teenagers, couldn’t have shown up in the Riverside drive area if it wanted to on Thursday night, too many teenagers and adults were roaming that section of the city.

At approximately 10 p.m., it was reported that cars were almost bumper-to-bumper along the river drive and a large number of cars were pulled off the road to permit joining in the area’s most popular in recent years “monster” hunting.

Some 20 reports from persons allegedly seeing the “monster” have been quoted since Tuesday night when the “all white, creature without a discernible head,” was reported seen near the city rock quarry. Wednesday night about 30 teenagers engaged in a “monster hunt,” but by Thursday night the number of teenagers had doubled and a number of adults joined in the action.

A combination of spring fever, lack of area recreation facilities, and recent publicity give a Michigan town which claims to have a “monster” which followed people are believed to have laid the basis for the wildly imaginative story about a Grafton “monster.”

A routine check by The Sentinel showed that the “monster” may have resulted from the fact that an individual pushing a handcart loaded high with boxes, walked along Riverside drive on Tuesday night. In the half-light of late evening, this person and the loaded handcart apparently took on a weird shape for persons having just read the story of the Michigan “monster.”

“It’s fairly certain that “monsters” don’t go around pushing handcarts loaded with boxes.”

The original witness continued to investigate the monster sightings despite the skepticism of the newspaper editors. In correspondence with UFO enthusiast Gray Barker, the investigator maintained that there was indeed an incident in which a witness mistook a handcart load of boxes for the monster, but that incident took place the night after the original sighting and that what he saw was “clearly alive”.

Additional witnesses were found up and down the river with tallying descriptions, but no further publicity was given to the investigation and Grafton’s Headless Horror soon faded into the fog of history.
